Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 23: FICCI FLO JKL Chapter in a significant initiative focused on menstrual hygiene awareness today handed over nearly 4000 sanitary napkins to Chief Spokesperson BJP Mahila Morcha J&K UT Ritika Trehan in an impressive function organized here today for the distribution of the same among marginalized and weaker women.Ritika expressed gratitude to Varuna Anand, Chairperson of FICCI FLO JKL, along with the core team members, Ruchika Gupta, Aarti Chowdhary, Pooja Gandotra Chandni Kapoor , Monika Saraf, Sona Mehta & all the Ficci members for this noble initiative. She also lauded the optimistic efforts of FICCI FLO JKL to stimulate the awareness campaign among the general public in slums areas. Earlier Team FICCI FLO appreciated Ritika for undertaking various kinds of social works and making consistent efforts to reach out marginalized and vulnerable sections of society both financially and socially also. Speaking on the occasion, Ritika said at a time when there is a debate going on about freebies offered by political parties to lure voters, the campaign is more to bring a behavioural change in women and to inculcate in them the habit of adopting hygienic practices. She said, after the Ujjwala scheme, which provided free LPG connections to women across the country and became one of the potent reasons for the popularity of BJP, free distribution of sanitary pads could be another such move. She said menstruation was still taboo for many women, who forget about going to the market to buy sanitary pads. "A teenage daughter in a family may be willing to use sanitary pads, but whom should she talk to," that's where the BJP campaign would help them, Ritika added. Ritika stressed there are many girls, who enter the age of adolescence and yet are not aware of menstruation. Out of fear, they even do not tell about this to their families. "When we will distribute napkins, the girls will use them,. It will become a source of education on menstrual health too," and this is part of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi's Swachha Bharat (Clean India) campaign" she said. She briefed about various myths and taboos about Menstruation cycle and she made aware them about scientific and hygiene among them. She said that with menstrual hygiene, a woman can have a healthy life. Menstrual hygiene must never be underestimated or ignored. Menstrual hygiene is a must for every girl and woman. Ritika further said that menstruation is nothing but a very normal biological phenomenon, and adolescent girls and women should understand that they have the power of procreation only because of this virtue. She said BJP believes that woman's health and welfare is of prime importance and conducts menstrual hygiene camps with an aim to create awareness on adopting hygienic practices amongst women. She said in India even mere mention of the menstruation topic has been a taboo in the past and even to this date the cultural and social influences appear to be a hurdle for advancement of knowledge on the subject. Culturally in many parts of India, menstruation is still considered to be dirty and impure.
