Early Times Report THANNAMANDI, Jan 15: Govt Degree College Thannamandi, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized an extension lecture to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event, held under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmed, the Principal of the College, featured Dr. Ashaq Malik, the Coordinator of IQAC, as the resource person. Prof. Farooq Ahmed emphasized the importance of introducing young minds to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., emphasizing values such as belongingness, nonviolence, and equality demonstrated by the civil rights champion. He commended the organizing team for initiating this effort to raise awareness among students and youth about the significant contributions of Dr. King. In a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation, Dr. Ashaq elaborated on how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, led the Civil Rights movements in the United States. He highlighted Dr. King's efforts in ending legal segregation of African-Americans through nonviolent means, earning him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1965, making him the youngest recipient at that time. Dr. Ashaq also delved into Dr. King's iconic "I Have A Dream" speech and his influential "Letter from Birmingham Jail," explaining the principles and steps of Kingian nonviolence along with the concept of the beloved community. Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Head of the Department of History and officiating Principal, provided a historical context of the discrimination faced by people of color in America before Dr. King's activism. Prof. Asif Aijaz Lone, Head of the Department of Physics and NSS Programme Officer, introduced the audience to the global celebration of Dr. King's birthday as King Day since 1986. Prof. Altaf Hussain, Head of the Department of Education and NCC Officer, extended the formal vote of thanks. The event was attended by various faculty members, including Prof. Mudasir Majeed, Prof. Fatima Parveen, Prof. Supriya Gupta, Dr. Shiraz Ahmed, Prof. Rumy Dar, Mr. Anuj Bali (Librarian), Dr. Nisar Bhat, and Dr. Nusrat Farooq, among others. |
