SKUAST-Jammu hosts successful training for farmers on millet farming in changing climates | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 25: Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu) organized a one-day awareness cum training program on the "Importance of Millets under Changing Climatic Conditions." The event, conducted at Gharota village in District Jammu on January 25, 2024, was part of the IEA-HADP-Extension Project in collaboration with BRRC, Chakroi, under the auspices of SKUAST-Jammu. Farmers from Gharota village and neighboring areas actively participated in the program, engaging with scientists from SKUAST-Jammu and officials from line departments. The focus of the training was on imparting scientific techniques for the care and management of millets, aiming to enhance their production in rainfed areas amid evolving climatic conditions. Several experts from different disciplines delivered insightful lectures during the awareness cum training program. Dr. Vikas Gupta, welcoming the participants, highlighted the suitability of millets in rainfed crop planning, especially under late onset of Monsoon conditions in the changing climate. Dr. Reena emphasized integrated insects/pests management in millets, covering both organic and inorganic approaches. Dr. Sonika Jamwal provided insights into disease management in millets through organic methods. Dr. Neeraj Gupta discussed value addition in millets and its significance for the economic upliftment of rainfed farmers. Vinod Sharma, AEO Bhalwal, delved into climate resilience and economic security achieved through millets in rainfed areas. Vishal Soodan, AEA, Bhalwal, presented a detailed lecture on major millets and their benefits in the rainfed areas of Jammu. S. Mohinder Singh, AEA, Bhalwal Upper B, shared information on improved scientific practices for millets under rainfed areas. Expressing satisfaction, the farmers appreciated the program for providing valuable insights into production and plant protection technology concerning millets in rainfed areas amid changing climatic conditions. Dr. Sonika Jamwal, at the conclusion of the program, extended gratitude to the participants, experts, and everyone involved in making the awareness cum training initiative a success. The farmers expressed their anticipation for similar informative sessions in the future. |
