GDC RS Pura commemorates World Wetland Day
2/2/2024 10:31:10 PM
Early Times Report
RS PURA, Feb 2: Embracing the significance of World Wetlands Day, the Government Degree College (GDC) in R.S. Pura celebrated the occasion on February 2nd, shedding light on the crucial role wetlands play for both people and the planet. The theme for this year's observance was "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing," marking the adoption of the convention on wetlands on February 2, 1971. In collaboration with the NSS unit, the Institutional Innovation Council (IIC), and the Viksit Bharat Club of the college, a seminar was organized on the college campus. The event aimed to foster global awareness about the indispensable role of wetlands in supporting diverse ecosystems.
Under the able guidance of Dr. Rajni Bhagat, the esteemed Principal of the college, students actively engaged in the seminar by sharing their perspectives and ideas. They emphasized the importance of wetlands in maintaining a diverse ecosystem and expressed concern about the potential ecological damage if wetlands were to disappear.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Chanchal Angral, NSS Program Officer, and President of IIC, highlighted the vital role of the environment in safeguarding ecosystems. She stressed the need to address changes affecting ecosystems, citing the threat of extinction faced by multiple species due to anthropogenic activities. Dr. Angral emphasized the moral obligation of humans to protect the environment from degradation.
Dr. Nitti Chibber, Convener of IIC, emphasized that small changes in daily lifestyles can contribute significantly to reducing the carbon footprint on the environment. She highlighted the importance of individuals taking responsibility for the environment without necessarily requiring substantial financial investment.
Concluding the program, students of the college pledged their commitment to environmental conservation, recognizing it as a shared responsibility to ensure a happy and clean planet for all.
The event was skillfully coordinated by Dr. Chanchal Angral (NSS PO) and Dr. Sunil Kumar Mangoch (Nodal Officer Viksit Bharat), with the presence of Prof Shelly Kalsi from the Department of Computer Science. The formal vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Hari Singh.
