GDC Kathua commemorates World Wetlands Day

KATHUA, Feb 2: In a dedicated effort to raise awareness about the crucial role wetlands play in our ecosystem, the Department of Environmental Sciences and Eco-club Ravi at Govt Degree College Kathua, under the patronage of Principal Prof. Seema Mir, observed World Wetlands Day on February 2, 2024.
This year's theme, "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing," was at the forefront of the commemoration, emphasizing the intricate connection between wetlands and the overall health and prosperity of humanity.
The commemorative event commenced with an engaging educational documentary screening for students, aimed at imparting valuable knowledge about the significance of wetlands in our ecosystem. Dr. Shivali Panjgotra, Assistant Professor of Environmental Sciences, welcomed the attendees with an opening address, setting the tone for an insightful and educational program.
Prof. Arvind Kumar, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences, shared profound insights into the ecological, economic, and social importance of wetlands. His presentation aimed to inspire students and attendees, fostering an appreciation for the vital role wetlands play in sustaining life on Earth.
Dr. Yash Paul Sharma, Head of the Department of Urdu, delivered a lecture underscoring the critical significance of wetlands in maintaining our ecosystem. Dr. Ram Singh, Head of the Department of Education and Coordinator of the IGNOU center at GDC Kathua, encouraged students to adopt sustainable habits. He expressed hope that events of this nature would instill a sense of responsibility and awareness about the importance of wetlands for a sustainable future.
The program, attended by approximately 90 students, concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Meena Devi. The event was graced by the presence of esteemed faculty members, including Prof. Manmohan Singh, Dr. Som Dutt, Prof. Jagmohan, Dr. Kulbir Singh, and Prof. Heena Saini.
The World Wetlands Day celebration at Govt Degree College Kathua successfully achieved its goal of educating and inspiring students about the crucial role of wetlands in maintaining ecological balance and promoting human wellbeing. The institution remains committed to fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices among its students.
