J&K police initiates NAFIS labs at district levels | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 17: Following the footsteps of rest of the states in the country, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have also initiated National Automated Fingerprint Identification System ( NAFIS ) labs at district levels across the Jammu region for data collection of criminals through fingerprints. Notably, NAFIS plays a crucial role in criminal investigations and helps to identify suspects, link crimes to specific individuals, and provide important evidence in court cases. "Likewise other states of the country, now Jammu and Kashmir Police are also collecting the fingerprints data of criminals along with their photographs to ease out their tracking and confirm their involvement in case of crimes reported," official sources said. They added that to set this exercise into motion, the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) labs have been started in every district of Jammu and Kashmir to collect fingerprints of criminals. "The manpower dealing in handling NAFIS operations are also being trained by the expert teams," sources said. They said that NAFIS Lab has recently been started in Jammu district, where a database of fingerprints of criminals is being prepared as they are helpful in criminals investigation, adding, "those involved in crimes like terrorism, bovine smuggling, narcotics smuggling can be easily be identified and the involvement can further be proved with photographs and fingerprints of the arrested criminals by the police before producing him in the court." "The fingerprint data along with photographs of such criminals are being updated online in the labs while Station House Officers in all the districts of the division including Jammu have been provided with fingerprint scanners for following the necessary procedure at their level," sources added. They revealed that the criminals hiding their identities will no longer be able to dodge the police through NAFIS Lab exercise, adding they said, "with the help of fingerprints, previous records of the criminals will be known by the police." "The NAFIS labs have been started in all the districts and they have been made operational. A database of fingerprints of criminals is being prepared for record," a senior police official confirmed. |
