Hiranagar, Feb 22: Govt. Girdhari Lal Dogra Memorial Degree College Hiranagar reverberated with the celebration of linguistic diversity as students and faculty came together to commemorate International Mother Language Day. Under the esteemed guidance of Dr. Pragya Khanna, the Principal, and the supervision of HOD Dogri Department, National Sahitya Akademi Awardee Ganga Sharma, an enriching event unfolded with the theme, Expressing oneself in one’s mother tongue. The event commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the esteemed Principal, Dr. Pragya Khanna, who delivered an inspiring speech, setting the tone for the festivities. Ganga Sharma, the HOD of the Dogri Department, extended a warm welcome, emphasizing the importance of embracing and celebrating one’s mother tongue with pride. She highlighted this year’s theme, “Multilingual education is a pillar of intergenerational learning,” stressing the significance of preserving languages as conduits for traditional knowledge and cultural heritage. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 27 students from the 4th and 6th semesters, who showcased their linguistic talents through recitations of poems, storytelling, musical performances, and discussions about historical places in languages including Dogri, Paddri, Pahari, Gojri, and Poonchi. Distinguished senior colleagues, including Dr. Amit Kumar Sharma, Prof. Neeru Sharma, Dr. Rajni Bala, and Dr. Punam Rani, graced the occasion as special guests. They encouraged students to embrace multilingualism while emphasizing the importance of preserving one’s mother language as an integral part of cultural identity. Dr. Vijay Kumar, from the Department of Hindi, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all participants and guests for their contributions to the event’s success. The culmination of the event saw the distribution of Prof. Ganga Sharma’s poetry collection book titled “MANNAE DA BUAAL,” which earned her the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award in 2020, making her the first woman from Jammu Kashmir to receive this honor. The distribution aimed to inspire students to explore and excel in writing poetry and literature in their mother tongue. The celebration of International Mother Language Day at Govt.
