DB disposes of PIL concerning traffic congestion and pollution in Smart City Project | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Mar 14: A recent PIL filed by residents of Peerbagh and Hyderpora addressed concerns over the construction activities undertaken as part of the Smart City Project. The petitioners highlighted the adverse effects of the ongoing constructions, including severe traffic congestion and increased pollution levels in the area. In response to the PIL, a Division Bench of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court, headed by Chief Justice N Kotishwar Singh and Justice MA Chowdhary, acknowledged the grievances raised by the residents. The Bench directed that the representation submitted by the petitioners to the competent authority be thoroughly examined to mitigate the public's difficulties arising from the construction activities. The court disposed of the PIL with the observation that the authorities should expedite the resolution of the issues outlined in the petitioners' representation. It emphasized the importance of addressing the concerns raised by the residents in a timely manner. The Chief Secretary to the Government, Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, was specifically tasked with overseeing the expeditious handling of the matter. The Bench granted a period of four weeks for the authorities to review and address the concerns raised, urging swift action for the benefit of the affected residents. However, it also granted the petitioners the liberty to approach the court again if the need arises after the review period. With the disposal of this Public Interest Litigation, the court has signaled its commitment to ensuring the well-being of the residents impacted by the Smart City Project's construction activities. The decision reflects a balance between development initiatives and environmental concerns, underscoring the importance of sustainable urban planning in mitigating adverse effects on communities. —JNF |
