GDC, Hirangar celebrates International Day of Forests

JAMMU, Mar 22: On the occasion of International Day of Forests on 21-03-2023, Deptt. Of Environmental Sciences and Eco club of Govt. GLDM Degree College, Hiranagar organized Plantation drive under the patronage of Dr. Pragya Khanna, Princpal GDC Hiranagar. In 2024, the theme of International Day of forests is "Forests and Innovation: New solutions for a better world." A total number of sixty students participated very enthusiastically and planted various trees like Guava, bottlebrush, eucalyptus, mango, lemon etc. as well as various seasonal flowering plants.
Principal of the college, Dr. Pragya Khanna apprised the students of the importance of celebrating forest day. She informed the students that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21st March as the International Day of Forests in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of the forests. She added that Ecosystem restoration, including reforestation, can significantly contribute in mitigation of climate change. She also appreciated the efforts of staff and students involved in the plantation drive.
The plantation drive was conducted under the supervision of Prof. Neeru Sharma, HOD Deptt. Of Environmental sciences and Convener ECO Club. She motivated the students for participating in the tree plantation in college campus as well as in their homes and public places. She also encouraged the students to take care of the plants planted by them. Prof. Bindu Sharma, Dr. Poonam Kamotra, Dr. Anupma Arora , Dr. Ram Krishan , Prof. Bhavana Jamwal, Dr. Poonam Rani, Prof. Shapia Shameem, Prof. Ganga Sharma, Dr. Rajni Bala, Prof. Farzana Prof. Balvinder and Dr. Ritu participated in the plantation drive very exuberantly.
