PDP to fight NC on Kashmir Lok Sabha seats
Mehbooba, Omar exchange barbs, blame each other for breaking alliance
4/3/2024 11:09:50 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 3: Two constituents of INDIA bloc in Jammu and Kashmir started exchanging barbs after the National Conference announced Gujjar leader Mian Altaf as the party candidate for the prestigious Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha seat.
On Wednesday PDP and the National Conference officially announced they would compete against each other for the three Lok Sabha seats in Kashmir.
Mehbooba Mufti of the PDP has blamed Omar Abdullah of the National Conference for not leaving them any choice but to run in the elections.
Omar Abdullah responded by saying the PDP is not keeping to an earlier agreement made for the 2020 local elections. Mufti said to the press that her party has to run for the three seats because the National Conference is not giving them another option. Her party will decide soon who will be their candidates.
While discussing with the Congress party about who will run for which seats, the National Conference said they will run for the same three seats they won in the 2019 elections. They agreed to let the Congress have two seats in Jammu.
Mufti also mentioned that it’s important for the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir to stay together, especially after the central government removed the special status of the state in August 2019.
The former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir said that young people are in jail, and no one can speak up due to the oppressive environment. She emphasized the need for unity in such tough times.
She expressed disappointment with the National Conference (NC) leadership’s approach, saying it was upsetting. She had hoped that Farooq Abdullah, the NC president, would make a fair decision about which party would contest which seats, putting the party’s interests aside.
However, she said the NC decided to run for all three parliamentary seats in Kashmir without consulting her party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This decision was made public without discussing it with the PDP, which could have chosen not to run if there had been talks, considering the greater good of Kashmir.
She mentioned that Omar Abdullah’s announcement that the NC would contest all three seats and not leave any for the PDP was hurtful to her party members.
