GDC Thannamandi celebrates World Intellectual Property cum World Book Day

Thannamandi, Apr 26: The Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) in collaboration with NSS and Department of Library under the aegis of IQAC of GDC Thannamandi celebrated World Intellectual Property cum World Book Day as part of Viksit Bharat@47 Sankalp here today.
On this occasion an extension lecture on theme “IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity with special reference to Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) & IP management for Start-ups” hosted under the patronage of Prof. (Dr.) Farooq Ahmed, Principal of the College in which Dr. Ashaq Malik, IQAC Coordinator and Head, Department of Botany was resource person.
While speaking on the occasion Prof. Farooq Ahmed emphasized upon the need of awareness about IPRs for personal and professional growth and capacity building, and taking our nation and world at large to the next level through creativity, innovation and start-ups hence address Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Students and youth can play pivotal role to bridge the gaps through start-up schemes, he said. He also underlined the declining culture of book reading which again needs innovations to bring it back on the track. Dr. Farooq appreciated the organizing team for taking initiative to celebrate these less known but very important days; World IP Day and World Book and Copyright Day which are marked on April 26th and 23rd respectively.
Dr. Ashaq Malik, IQAC Coordinator and Head, Department of Botany, through PowerPoint presentation detailed the audience about history, relevance and different types of Intellectual Properties Rights including Patents, Trademark, Industrial Design, Geographical Indication, Copyright, Trade Secret etc. He demonstrated with examples, how IP is contributing in overcoming the most pressing issues of our world and helping in transforming it. The linkage and integration of IPRs in the start-ups programs is of paramount importance to address SDGs especially SDG 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 12, 13, 14 and 15. He explained various acts, provisions and opportunities related to IPRs at national and international level under the umbrella of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Earlier, Anuj Bali, Librarian and Vice President of IIC of GDC Thannamandi introduced the audience about the programme and gave a brief account of World Book Day which is celebrated since 2000 to mark death anniversary great luminaries including William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega who all died on this day (April 23).
Dr Ather Aziz Raina, Head Department of Mathematics conducted the proceedings of the programme whereas Prof. Asif Aijaz, Head Department of Physics and NSS Coordinator presented formal vote of thanks.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Dr. Abdul Haque Naimi, Dr. Nazar Ul Islam, Dr. Goher Iqbal, Dr. Junaid Ahmed, Dr. Shiraz Ahmed, Prof. Fatima Parveen, Dr. Ather Aziz Raina, Prof Rumy Dar, Prof. Rizwana, Dr. Nagina, Dr. Sarfaraz Mirza, Dr. Arshad Khan, Dr. Nisar Bhat, Dr. Mohd Javaid, Dr. Nusrat Farooq and Dr. Wahid Ahmed Qazi.
