Labour Day Commemorated at GDC Bhaderwah | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 3: The Women Development Cell, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology under the auspices of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Government Degree College (GDC) Bhaderwah, orchestrated a series of thought-provoking activities and events to mark International Labour Day, observed globally on May 1st each year. The program, held under the esteemed patronage of Prof. Shakeel Ahmed Khanday, aimed to enlighten students about the indispensable contributions of workers to society, reaffirming the commitment to uphold their rights and ensure economic growth translates into enhanced living standards and improved working conditions for all. Under the guidance of Prof. Anuradha Sharma, Convener of WDC, the program commenced with a comprehensive overview of Labour Day's significance, highlighting the vital role of the working class in nation-building. Prof. Sharma paid homage to these unsung heroes through a recitation of Ramdhari Singh Dinkar's poem, "Mai Mazdoor hoon". Dr. Ajaz Wani, HOD Zoology and IQAC Coordinator, emphasized the importance of observing such commemorative days in college, stressing their role in raising awareness about social issues and amplifying the voices of marginalized groups. Dr. Aijaz Ahmed, HOD Sociology, delivered an enlightening lecture on social justice and labour rights, shedding light on strategies to advocate for fair labour practices and combat structural inequality. Dr. Azhar Amin's recitation of Urdu verses added depth and emotion to the event, serving as a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and dignity in the workplace. A short film titled "Kaavi" was screened to foster empathy and understanding among students, acquainting them with the challenges faced by workers. The interactive session saw active participation from college students, who voiced their concerns and engaged in fruitful discussions. A poster-making competition on the theme of "Ensuring Safety and Health at Work in a Changing Climate" saw the creative talents of eight students, supported by faculty members including Dr. Anayetullah Wani, Prof. Mudassir Majeed, Prof. Renuka Goria, Prof. Deepika Devi, Dr. Bilal Ahmed, Dr. Basharat Malik, and Prof. Bablu Kumar.
