Early Times Report JAMMU, May 16: The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-Jammu) celebrated the 3rd National Lac Insect Day with great enthusiasm at its main campus in Chatha. Organized by the Division of Entomology under the Network Project on Conservation of Lac Insect Genetic Resources, the event highlighted the importance of the lac insect (Laccifer lacca), known for producing lac, a valuable resin used in cosmetics, food, and electronics industries. Dr. R.K. Gupta, PI, Professor and Head of the Division of Entomology/Sericulture, provided an introduction to lac, its uses, and the significance of National Lac Insect Day. He also discussed the natural presence of lac insects and host plants in the Jammu region and their conservation. Dr. Kamlesh Bali, Co-PI, emphasized the ecological and economic importance of lac insects and encouraged sustainable practices and community involvement. Dr. Arti Sharma, SRF, explained the process of lac cultivation from inoculation to harvest and its various industrial uses. A practical field trip to a nearby regional gene bank was organized, allowing students and attendees to observe the inoculation process, where lac insects are introduced to host trees, and see how the resin is harvested and processed.
