Government Polytechnic Jammu organizes technical visit to Electrical Central Workshop Division, Narwal | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 16: The Government Polytechnic College Jammu, under the guidance of Principal Er. Arun Bangotra and Head of the Electrical Engineering Department Er. Manjeet Singh, organized a technical visit for fourth-semester Electrical Engineering students to the Electrical Central Workshop Division in Narwal, Jammu Division. This visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to gain practical insights and deepen their understanding of real-world applications in their field of study. The group of students was briefed by a team of technical expert officers including Er. Bhanu Partap Singh Jamwal, Technical Officer; Er. Punica, Assistant Engineer; Er. Sanjeev Dutta, Junior Engineer; and Er. Pratiksha, Junior Engineer. They provided an in-depth explanation of the repair and reclamation processes for distribution transformers with capacities ranging from 25 KVA to 630 KVA. During the visit, students were given a comprehensive tour of the workshop, observing various operations such as: Opening of transformers. Rewinding of transformers using winding machines (both HT and LT winding). Reconditioning of LT winding. Assembling of transformers. Heat treatment in ovens to achieve the desired Meggar value. Designing transformers for star and delta connections. Oil filtration using an oil filtration plant and sampling to obtain the desired Breakdown Voltage (BDV). Filling transformer bodies with oil and sealing them. The tour also included detailed explanations of the testing processes for repaired transformers in the workshop's testing laboratory. These tests include HV and LV tests, Meggar tests, core and copper loss tests, open circuit and short circuit tests, double voltage double frequency tests, and turns ratio tests. The technical expert officers also shared the history of the Electrical Central Workshop Division, established in 1986 and covering a large area. The workshop maintains a stock of approximately 600 to 650 repaired transformers to meet demand. The Transformer Testing Laboratory in this workshop is noted for being one of the unique testing labs in the province. Faculty members Er. Devika Bhardwaj and Er. Vicky Sharma from the Electrical Engineering Department accompanied the students during the visit. This initiative underscores the importance of practical knowledge and hands-on experience in fostering academic growth and professional development among aspiring engineers. |
