CCI delegation meets Labour Commissioner to discuss mandatory closed day for shops, establishments

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 6: A delegation from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) led by its President, Sh. Arun Gupta, today held a meeting with the Labour Commissioner of the Union Territory (UT) of Jammu and Kashmir to discuss the issue of mandatory observance of a "Closed Day" for shops and establishments.
During the meeting, Sh. Arun Gupta emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir is a key pilgrim and tourist destination, with tourism being a major pillar of the region's economy. He highlighted the importance of allowing business establishments to remain open throughout the week, stating that many visitors come to the region to purchase goods and enjoy local delicacies. Restricting business hours, according to him, would hinder the region's potential to serve tourists and boost local commerce.
Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's statement on the importance of keeping shops open 24x7 to support the national economy, Sh. Gupta pointed out that retail outlets operating under Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and local malls are allowed to function without mandatory closed days. He argued that similar provisions should be extended to local shops and establishments to create a level playing field.
Gupta also informed the Labour Commissioner that employees working in these establishments receive a paid weekly day off. In cases where employees voluntarily work on their off day, they are compensated with additional pay.
In response, the Labour Commissioner assured the delegation that businesses in areas frequented by tourists and pilgrims would be exempted from the mandatory observance of a closed day. He further requested the CCI to provide a detailed list of the areas and trades that should be considered for exemption. The delegation included Anil Gupta, Senior Vice President, Rajeev Gupta, Junior Vice President, and Rajesh Gupta, Treasurer of CCI.
This discussion is seen as a positive step toward promoting business and tourism in Jammu and Kashmir while ensuring fair labor practices.
