GCW Gandhi Nagar organizes Poshan Abhiyan | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 10: A 3-day nutrition mela organised by Department of Home Science, PSPS GCW Gandhi Nagar under the patronage of Dr. S.P.Saraswat , Principal, PSPS GCW Gandhi Nagar Jammu has commenced as part of the broader Poshan Maah (Nutrition Month) celebrations, aimed at raising awareness about nutrition and health, particularly for women and children. Poshan Maah, observed annually in India during the month of September, is a key initiative under the POSHAN Abhiyaan (Prime Minister's Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition) launched by the Government of India to combat malnutrition and promote better health practices. During the mela, various activities and programs are likely to take place, such as Nutritional awareness which will include educating people, especially women, about the importance of balanced diets and micronutrition deficiencies especially anaemia, cooking demonstrations showcasing healthy recipes, emphasizing locally available foods that provide essential nutrients, health check-ups offering free medical check-ups, BMI testing nutritional counseling. The first session of the 3-day nutrition mela began with a lively debate, setting an engaging tone for the event. The debate likely focused on critical topic related to nutrition and public health, aligning with the broader goals of Poshan Maah. Key theme was 'Back to roots: Essence of traditional food and nutritional values'. The jury for the debate included Prof. Rakesh Singh, HoD Chemistry, Dr. Samriti Aggarwal, HoD Zoology and Dr. Anju Koul, Associate Professor, Department of Botany. The culinary challenge was also organised on first day of nutrition mela, focused on combating anemia, aimed to raise awareness about iron-rich diets and showcase innovative, nutritious recipes to help prevent and manage anemia. The culinary challenge was judged by experts Dr. Anjali Bhat, HoD Home Science, Dr. Anuradha Gandotra, HoD Food Science and Technology and Dr. Rupinder Kour, HoD Education. Nearly 53 students participated in first day of event. In the upcoming sessions of the 3-day nutrition mela, further programs will include PowerPoint presentations, which will likely focus on key areas of nutrition and public health. These presentations will serve as a tool to educate and inform students, providing a structured and visual way to convey important messages about health and nutrition. Further awareness lecture will be important part of program which will be delivered by medical officer from Directorate of Ayush-J&K. Body composition analysis and nutrition counselling will be done by VLCC Health clinics during program. The organising committee included Dr. Anjali Bhat (HoD- Home Science), Dr. Neelima Gupta, Prof. Vishav Deepika and Dr. Archana Bhat from the department of Home Science. |
