Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 12: Arun Gupta, President of the Chamber of Commerce & Industry, met Atal Dulloo, IAS, Chief Secretary of the Union Territory of J&K, to discuss the implications of a recent order by the Labour Department, mandating a "Close Day" for shops and business establishments. Gupta expressed concern that the timing of this mandate was inappropriate, especially with the election process beginning. He highlighted that the circular had created a sense of unease among the business community. Gupta further referenced the Prime Minister's announcement regarding 24x7 working hours for businesses to boost the economy and pointed out the inconsistency between the new mandate and the flexibility allowed for FDI-backed retail operations. He also noted the unregulated nature of online trade, which operates around the clock, contrasting it with restrictions placed on physical businesses. Moreover, Gupta emphasized the importance of tourism and pilgrimage for the economy of Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the need to keep businesses open all week to serve visitors and contribute to the state's revenue. He also mentioned that wholesale markets already observe a "Close Day." In response, the Chief Secretary assured Gupta that he would engage with the Labour Commissioner to address the concerns of the business community, ensuring that no undue difficulties arise. |
