Early Times Report
JAMMU, Sept 13: The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and NSS Unit of Government College for Women, Bhagwati Nagar, organized a one-day seminar on the theme "Suicide and Suicidal Thoughts: Symptoms, Causes, & Prevention." The seminar, held under the patronage of the college principal, Dr. Meeru Abrol, aimed to raise awareness about suicide prevention and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conversations.
With suicide recognized as a significant global public health challenge, contributing to over 700,000 deaths annually, the seminar coincided with the observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, celebrated each year on September 10th. This year's theme for 2024-2026, "Changing the Narrative on Suicide," was discussed in depth by the resource person for the event, Dr. Shamim Akhter, Medical Officer at PHC Shri Amarnath Yatri Niwas, Bhagwati Nagar. She emphasized the importance of fostering a culture of openness and understanding regarding suicide, moving away from silence and stigma.
In her address, Dr. Meeru Abrol, the college principal, encouraged everyone to initiate conversations about suicide prevention. "Every conversation, no matter how small, helps create a more supportive and understanding society. By addressing the issue openly, we can break down barriers and promote a culture of care and support," she said.
The seminar saw enthusiastic participation from around 70 students, who engaged in thoughtful discussions and raised various queries on the topic. These queries were addressed expertly by Dr. Akhter, concluding the session with a productive group discussion.
The event was organized under the leadership of IQAC Coordinator Prof. Nisha Bhagat and NSS Program Officer Dr. Preeti Salthia.
The seminar successfully highlighted the importance of open dialogue in preventing suicides and promoting mental well-being.
