Early Times Report JAMMU, Sept 19: The Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and Career Counseling Cell of Government College for Women, Bhagwati Nagar, in collaboration with the Department of Horticulture, Government of J&K (UT), have initiated a month-long vocational course on "Preservation of Food" for students. Around 70 students enrolled in this program, which aims to equip them with practical skills in food preservation. The course was inaugurated by Dr. Meeru Abrol, Principal of the college, who emphasized the growing importance of the food processing sector in India's economy. She highlighted the sector's contribution to GDP growth and its transformation through automation, mechanization, and technology. Dr. Abrol also underlined the crucial role food processing plays in maintaining a steady food supply, addressing food scarcity, and reducing waste. Gul Saeed, Deputy Director of the Department of Horticulture, J&K, also addressed the students, stressing that vocational training in food processing technologies covers recent trends in food preservation and manufacturing. He noted that food processing is a significant source of employment and that such courses can help create job opportunities, especially in rural areas. He further discussed the department's efforts in supporting small-scale industries and startups. During the practical session, instructors demonstrated the process of making and preserving lime juice and showed students how to convert lemon peels into lemon pickle. The vocational course is being coordinated by Prof. Nisha Bhagat, Coordinator IQAC, and Dr. Pavanjeet Bali, Coordinator Career Counseling Cell.
