Jammu, Sept 24: In celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, the Department of Commerce at Government College for Women (GCW), Bhagwati Nagar, organized an on-spot essay writing competition under the patronage of Dr. Meeru Abrol, Principal of the college. The event was part of a series of activities commemorating Gandhi Jayanti, focusing on Mahatma Gandhi's enduring legacy. Students from B.Com Semester III and Semester V participated with great enthusiasm, writing essays on the topic “Gandhiji’s Contribution to Indian Education.” The competition encouraged students to reflect on Gandhi's teachings and their relevance in today’s world. Essays highlighted Gandhian values like non-violence, social justice, and the importance of truth, offering insightful perspectives on these timeless principles. Mahatma Gandhi's vision for education, commonly referred to as "Basic Education," was a key theme in the essays. Gandhi advocated for education in the mother tongue and emphasized activity-based learning to empower students with practical skills and independence. His vision for small, self-reliant communities, where citizens live cooperatively and uphold values of industriousness, self-respect, and generosity, was explored in depth. Speaking on the occasion, Principal Dr. Meeru Abrol highlighted the relevance of Gandhian principles in daily life. She emphasized Gandhi’s profound wisdom, humility, and unwavering resolve, noting how his spirit of non-violence and truth continues to inspire people to confront injustices with dignity and humanity. The event, organized by Prof. Gagan Jyoti, Head of the Commerce Department, not only honored Gandhi’s legacy but also encouraged creativity and critical thinking among students, fostering a deeper understanding of Gandhi’s contributions to education and society. |
