Symposium on 'Truth, Non-Violence' commemorates | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 2: In celebration of Gandhi Jayanti 2024, the NSS Unit, in collaboration with the Department of Sociology under the aegis of IQAC, organized an insightful symposium on the theme of "Truth and Non-Violence." The event aimed to explore the timeless relevance of these core principles, which were championed by Mahatma Gandhi, in today's increasingly complex global landscape. The symposium opened with a warm welcome by Prof. Shonima Malhotra, Head of the Department of Sociology, who set the tone for the event by emphasizing the crucial role of truth and non-violence in both personal and societal well-being. In her thought-provoking address, Prof. Malhotra underscored the importance of truth not only as a form of honesty with others but also as a fundamental practice of being truthful with oneself. She urged students to uphold truth, even in challenging situations, as a cornerstone of personal integrity. She also expanded on the concept of non-violence, explaining that it goes beyond physical restraint and extends into verbal, mental, emotional, and environmental dimensions. Non-violence, she explained, should start within our homes and extend to how we resolve conflicts in all aspects of life. Through a series of personal anecdotes and reflections, Prof. Malhotra illustrated how practicing these principles can positively transform relationships, build trust, and foster peaceful interactions. Following her address, students from various semesters took the stage to deliver speeches on the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi's teachings today. They reflected on how Gandhi's philosophy of truth as a guiding force in life offers clarity in a world often clouded by deception and confusion. They highlighted how non-violence, as Gandhi envisioned, was not a passive act but an active means to bring about social change without harm. Students emphasized that non-violence applies not only to the absence of physical conflict but to how we treat others in moments of anger, frustration, and disagreement. The event was organized under the leadership of Prof. Malhotra, with active support from Dr. Purvaiya Hans, NSS Coordinator, and other NSS Unit members. It was held under the guidance of Dr. G.S. Rakwal, Principal of the College. The symposium offered a reflective platform to honor Mahatma Gandhi's legacy and encouraged students to integrate these enduring values into their everyday lives. |
