Bus catches fire near Katra, all passengers safe
10/4/2024 9:35:14 PM
Early Times Report
KATRA, Oct 4: A passenger bus traveling from the pilgrimage town of Katra to Jammu caught fire earlier this afternoon, prompting a swift evacuation that saved the lives of all onboard. The incident occurred at afternoon hours when the bus, bearing registration number JK02AN4971, was near Nomain Naka, just outside Katra.
The fire reportedly originated from the engine, believed to be caused by a short circuit. The driver, noticing the smoke and flames, acted quickly and brought the vehicle to a halt. His timely action allowed all the passengers to deboard safely, preventing any injuries or casualties.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as initially chaotic, with passengers rushing to exit the bus, but the situation was brought under control due to the driver's alertness and the cooperative behavior of the passengers.
Local police and fire emergency services were called to the spot, arriving promptly to extinguish the flames and provide assistance to the passengers. The fire was successfully doused, though the bus suffered significant damage to the engine and parts of its interior.
Reasi police confirmed the absence of any human loss or injuries in a statement shortly after the incident. The authorities praised the driver for his swift response, which undoubtedly prevented a potentially tragic outcome.
Investigations are underway to confirm the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary reports suggest it was a mechanical issue related to an electrical short circuit in the bus's engine. The fire department is conducting a detailed inspection, and police will work alongside them to ensure such incidents are avoided in the future.
Passengers were later provided alternate transportation to their destination. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and maintenance standards of public transport in the region.
