Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 15: The Society for Promotion of Inclusive and Sustainable Development, Jammu organized a lecture to create awareness about Urban Farming amongst the students and staff of Govt. Higher Secondary School, Channi Himmat, Jammu here today. The lecture was delivered by Dr Ramakant Sharma, Executive member of Samiksha and an expert on the Subject. Delivering his lecture on the topic 'Urban Farming for Healthy Living', Dr Sharma sensitized the participants regarding the Urban farming scenario in Jammu and emphasized upon on-terrace gardening, vertical gardening, indoor gardening, school gardening as well as waste recycling. He advised the participants to adopt terrace gardening in containers or raised beds on terrace, balcony, roof top or other outdoor spaces to grow organic vegetables, fruits, ornamental and flowering plants, to boost organic produce, control air pollution and keep the home cool as well as to enhance decoration & beauty of building. Pointing out that indoor air is 5 times more polluted than outdoor air he recommended growing of houseplants like snake plant, Areca palm, Bamboo palm, Money plant, Spider-plant, Alovera, Rubber plant etc. for cleaning dust, volatile compounds and toxic gases within the home, besides growing vegetable, fruit, ornamental and flowering plants. He also addressed issues such as waste segregation at source for producing manure and use of waste water generated from kitchens, bathroom etc. for watering the plants. Speaking on the occasion, Neetu Gandotra, Principal of Govt Higher Secondary School Channi Himmat Jammu thanked Samiksha, The Society for Promotion of Inclusive and Sustainable Development, Jammu for organizing the lecture and enjoined upon the students present to endeavor to practically implement the ideas and inputs provided by Dr Sharma for ensuring family health.
