Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 22: In a recent meeting, the Jammu Kashmir Sharnarthi Action Committee (JKSAC) honored over 40,000 martyrs from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) who lost their lives in 1947 due to tribal violence supported by the Pakistani army. The meeting highlighted the neglect of these sacrifices in the nation's history and called for October 22 to be declared a Martyrs Day holiday. Gurdev Singh, President of JKSAC, along with Capt Puran Singh, Bhagwan Singh, and V.K. Sudan, emphasized that October 22, 1947, marks a dark chapter in history, often referred to as Black Day. They recalled the atrocities faced by Hindus and Sikhs, including massacres and forced displacement, describing it as one of the worst genocides witnessed in modern history. The leaders expressed disappointment over the lack of recognition and documentation of these sacrifices by past governments, stating that the displaced persons (DPs) have faced political, economic, and educational discrimination for decades. Despite Prime Minister Modi's relief package of ?5.5 lakhs for each DP family, they argued it does not adequately address their profound losses.
