Early Times Report JAMMU, Nov 8: Senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony urged the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah to consider the genuine demands raised by Civic Safaikaramcharis who are currently protesting for their rights and welfare. He emphasized the need for the government to address the challenges faced by these workers, who play an essential role in maintaining the city's cleanliness and hygiene. Notably, the Civic Safaikaramcharis have voiced their demands, which include the release of the final selection list for 600 pending Safaikaramchari (SKC) posts advertised by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) in 2018. Additionally, they seek resolution of pending cases under SRO-43 in JMC, timely Departmental Promotion Committees (DPC) for all JMC cadres, and the finalization of JMC's Recruitment Rules, which have been pending since the Re-Organization Order issued in 2022. They further urge amendments in the rules to reserve a 50% departmental promotion quota across all JMC cadres. Speaking on the plight of contractual Safaikaramcharis, Tony condemned the contractual system, pointing out that contractors often exploit these workers and fail to provide fair remuneration for their services. He demanded that the services of Civic Safaikaramcharis be brought under the Minimum Wages Act, ensuring that they receive fair compensation and protection under the law. Reaffirming Congress's commitment to the welfare of marginalized communities, including the poor, farmers, and laborers, Tony stated, "The Congress party has always stood with the downtrodden and underprivileged. The Civic Safaikaramcharis perform essential services that keep our city clean, and their demands are just and reasonable. I urge the government to fulfill these genuine demands promptly."
