Katra Ropeway Row: Tony strongly condemns arrests of protestors | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 26: Taranjit Singh Tony, Senior Congress Leader and DDC Suchetgarh, has strongly condemned the police action against peaceful protestors in Katra, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine, who were demanding the scrapping of the proposed ropeway project. Several individuals were detained by the police as the town began a 72-hour shutdown on Wednesday. In a press statement issued here today, the senior Congress leader expressed his concern, stating that protest is a fundamental right of the people, and the arrest of individuals who are voicing their concerns is completely unjust. He urged the Shrine Board to engage in meaningful discussions with all stakeholders, particularly the people of Katra, who are not only devoted followers of Mata Vaishno Devi but also depend on their businesses for their livelihood. "The Shrine Board should listen to the voices of the Katra people, as their interests and concerns must be taken into account. The local community has every right to be heard," Tony said and emphasized that arresting protestors is not the solution, and peaceful dialogue should be prioritized over force. Tony further called on the Shrine Board to come to the table with the local community and elected representatives to find a solution that benefits all parties. He also demanded the immediate release of those who have been detained. "Only through open dialogue can we ensure that the development of the region aligns with the interests of both the people of Katra and the future of the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine," Tony added. |
