KVK Reasi organises training programme on lemon grass farming | | | Early Times Report REASI, Jan 15: Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Reasi under the aegis of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Jammu (SKUAST-J) organised training programme on "Entrepreneurship development in lemon grass farming" here today at Sool village of Panthal block in Reasi distt. of J&K which was attended by number of rural women of the area. The programme was organised under the dynamic stewardship of Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Prof.BN Tripathi and able guidance of Director Extension, Prof.Amrish Vaid of SKUAST-Jammu.Chief Scientist & Head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Reasi, Dr.Banarsi Lal started the programme with warm welcome of the participants. He said that some belts of Reasi distt. are severely affected by the monkeys menace and there is need to find viable crops in the area.He further said that there is an immense potential of lemongrass farming in the monkey prone areas and added that there is need to minimize the effect of monkey menace in these area and for that purpose KVK is technically supporting the farmers and advising the farmers for its post-harvesting processing techniques. He informed to the participants that lemongrass is an alternative crop and not damaged by the monkeys. He guided participants on the advanced techniques in lemongrass farming and elaborated its cultivation and varietal identification practices. He informed that once the lemon grass crop is planted in the field it remains for more than five years in the field and under normal conditions, three harvests are feasible during the first year, and 3-4 in subsequent years, depending on the management practices followed by the farmers. He also added that this crop can be grown by the farmers in their fallow/waste land.He added that lemon grass farming can generate some income and self-employment avenues among the rural women. He further said that lemon grass possesses number of medicinal uses such as carminative and insect repellent, perfumes, cosmetics, herbal teas and non-alcoholic beverages. He narrated that lemon grass oil has strong lemon-like fragrance, due to high percentage of citral in its oil and by selling this oil farmers can enhance their income and employment. He stressed on the cluster based approach in its cultivation and urged farmers to grow it collectively. He discussed on the marketing management practices in lemongrass farming and expressed that through its value addition farmers can fetch more farm returns. He added that if grown commercially, lemongrass can prove as a boon to the farmers. During the programme the participants asked certain quarries which were answered by the ecientist in a satisfactorily way.The programme was concluded by Manohar Lal with formal vote of thanks. |
