Showroom owners warned against misleading customers with machine-made items | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Jan 20: The Handicrafts and Handloom Department of Kashmir has issued a stern warning to showroom owners selling machine-made items under the guise of genuine handmade Kashmir handicrafts. Strict action under the Tourist Trade and Quality Control Acts will be taken against violators. The department has received multiple complaints of machine-made Turkish carpets being sold as authentic Kashmir hand-knotted carpets, tarnishing the region's rich cultural heritage. Acting on these complaints, inspections are underway, with unlabelled counterfeit products being confiscated. The Central Inspection Squad has been tasked with intensifying inspections across Srinagar City Centre and tourist hubs like Gulmarg and Pahalgam to crack down on fraudulent practices. To support artisans and promote genuine handmade products, the department is urging stakeholders to apply for GI tagging, testing, and certification at institutions like CDI & IICT. This initiative aims to enhance customer trust and preserve Kashmir's heritage. Efforts are also underway to boost the capacity of the Pashmina Testing and Quality Certification Centre at CDI. Information and Education Campaigns (IEC) are being conducted at local and national levels to encourage customers to buy labelled, certified handmade products. |
