Early Times Report THANNAMANDI, Feb 15: Government Degree College (GDC) Thannamandi, in collaboration with the Police Department, organized an awareness program on the newly introduced criminal laws under the patronage of principal of the college Prof. Dr. Farooq Ahmed. The event was organized as per the directions of Home Department. The program aimed to educate students, faculty, and members of the local administration on recent legal reforms and their implications for law enforcement and society including Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS, BNSS & BSA). Sh. Popkar Singh, SDPO Thannamandi, was the main speaker, providing an in-depth understanding of the BNS 2023, which has replaced the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC). He highlighted key changes, including stricter punishments for organized crime, terrorism, and offenses against women, along with the introduction of community service as a penalty for petty offenses. He also discussed new provisions that focus on the use of technology in criminal investigations, faster justice delivery, and victim-centric legal reforms. Abid Hussain Shah, SDM Thannamandi, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and emphasized the importance of legal awareness in ensuring a just and law-abiding society. He spoke about the increased protection for women, children, and senior citizens under the new legal framework. The proceedings were conducted by Qadeer Ahmed Charak, BDO Thannamandi, while Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Vice Principal of GDC Thannamandi, delivered a comprehensive talk on the subject, stressing the need for citizens, especially students, to stay informed about their legal rights and responsibilities.
