The seminar commenced with a welcome address by Ruchika Gupta, Chairperson, FICCI FLO JKL and Joint Director MIET who emphasized the significance of legal awareness as a cornerstone for women's empowerment. Highlighting the global context, she noted that globally, women possess only about two-thirds of the legal rights afforded to men. Senior Advocate Smt. Surinder Kaur, with over 33 years of legal experience in the Jammu & Kashmir High Court and the Honourable Supreme Court of India, delivered the keynote address. She shared insights from her extensive legal career, stating, "Legal empowerment is not just about knowing one's rights but also about having the confidence and resources to assert them. Education and awareness are pivotal in this journey." She hoped that young women will become legally aware and help protect the rights of each other. She also informed the aspiring women lawyers about recent legal reforms benefiting women, underscoring the importance of understanding their right to education, avenues for seeking judicial support, and clarifying key laws that directly impact them. Dr. Rohnika Sharma, Director, CRC, Jammu, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India, discussed the intersection of legal rights and accessibility. She remarked, "Empowering women, especially those with disabilities, requires a multifaceted approach. Legal frameworks must be inclusive, ensuring that all women, regardless of their physical abilities, can exercise their rights fully." Professor Sunita Koul, Dean of the MIET School of Law, highlighted the role of educational institutions in fostering legal literacy. She also stressed that women early on in life must be made aware of their legal rights and be empowered with the right knowledge. The seminar also featured interactive sessions where students engaged with legal experts, discussing real-world scenarios and exploring avenues for legal recourse.
