Jammu, Feb 22: In a landmark move under the BNS (New Criminal Laws), Jammu Police in Police Post Sidhra has led to the conviction of persons namely Lekh Raj S/O Bhagat Ram R/O Bajalta and Ashok Singh S/O Dharam Singh R/O Bajalta, for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. The Honble Court of Special Excise Mobile Magistrate Jammu delivered the verdict today, marking a progressive step towards reformative justice. The incident took place on 19.02.2025, within the jurisdiction of the Police Post Sihdra, where the accused was found intoxicated and creating a public disturbance. He was promptly arrested, subjected to a medical examination, and presented before the Special Excise Mobile Magistrate Jammu. Rather than imposing traditional imprisonment, the court opted for community service as a corrective measure. Lekh Raj and Ashok Singh have been directed to perform community service at the nearest hospital one hour daily for 10 days. This provision under the new criminal laws emphasizes rehabilitation and community engagement for minor offenses, promoting reform over punishment. The effort by Jammu Police demonstrates a shift toward a more constructive approach in addressing public misdemeanors, setting a precedent for similar cases in the future. |
