Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 3: The Entomological Science Academy (ESA) of SKUAST-Jammu celebrated World Aquatic Animal Day, highlighting the vital role of aquatic insects in maintaining freshwater ecosystems. The event featured lectures, competitions, and a field visit, emphasizing the ecological significance of species like mayflies, dragonflies, caddisflies, and beetles. Dr. Rakesh Kumar Gupta, President of ESA, stressed the importance of these insects in nutrient cycling, water quality assessment, and as a crucial food source for aquatic and terrestrial species. Dr. Uma Shankar and Dr. A.K. Singh delivered insightful lectures on their role as bio-indicators of water pollution, advocating for wetland conservation and sustainable water management. A field excursion was also conducted, where students and faculty identified and collected specimens from a newly explored water body, gaining hands-on experience in aquatic insect ecology. Conservationists at the event called for community participation and policy support to protect these habitats. The day concluded with a plenary session by Dr. R.S. Bandral, Dr. Devinder Sharma, and Dr. Magdeshwar Sharma, followed by a public appeal for aquatic insect conservation. The initiative successfully raised awareness about the importance of preserving freshwater biodiversity and reinforced the need for collective conservation efforts. |
