Business-Friendly Future | | | In recent years Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has embarked on a transformative journey to foster a business-friendly environment and streamline regulatory frameworks across various sectors. These initiatives aim to attract investment, stimulate entrepreneurship, and integrate the region more fully into India’s economic landscape. A cornerstone of J&K’s economic strategy is the development of industrial estates. Seven new industrial estates have come up in Budgam, Srinagar, Kathua, Samba, Shopian, Pulwama, and Pantha Chowk. These estates are expected to attract investments totaling approximately Rs 8,700 crore and generate employment for over 28,000 individuals . Complementing this is the Jammu and Kashmir Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation (JKIDFC), which has been instrumental in reviving and completing over 600 long-pending infrastructure projects, thereby enhancing the region’s industrial and logistical capabilities . To simplify the process of establishing and operating businesses, the J&K government has introduced several measures. Two sets of Single Window Committees have been established to facilitate time-bound issuance of necessary No Objection Certificates (NoCs) and approvals for business units, both within and outside industrial estates. These committees aim to reduce bureaucratic delays and enhance efficiency in granting approvals related to power connections, water supply, and building plans . Furthermore, the government has been proactive in minimizing the requirement for multiple approvals, mandating only essential clearances from departments such as the Pollution Control Board and Fire and Emergency Services, wherever applicable. Recognizing the pivotal role of startups and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in economic development, J&K has launched the Startup Policy 2024-27. This policy aims to establish 2,000 new startups by 2027 and includes the creation of a Rs 250 crore Venture Capital Fund to provide financial support to emerging enterprises. Additionally, initiatives like the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) program are being implemented to improve MSMEs’ access to finance, technology, and markets. Efforts are also underway to facilitate the Geographical Indication (GI) tagging of traditional products, thereby promoting local crafts and artisans on a global platform. The “One District One Product” initiative has been adopted to promote local products for export, with Jammu and Srinagar districts selected among the 75 districts across the country for this program. The government is also focusing on the development of export hubs and the promotion of local industries, including the handloom and handicraft sectors. Jammu and Kashmir’s concerted efforts to create a conducive business environment and streamline regulatory processes reflect a commitment to economic revitalization and inclusive growth. By investing in infrastructure, simplifying business procedures, and empowering startups and local industries, the region is poised to become a significant contributor to country’s economic progress. |
