Parcel Train
9/15/2025 10:47:50 PM
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rule, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha wrote another chapter in J&K’s history by flagging of first dedicated Parcel Train from Kashmir to Delhi.
The dream has come true for Kashmir fruit growers as its for the first time since independence an alternative route has been provided to them to send their produce to other parts of the country.
The new freight train service is a big step for the apple growers. It will significantly reduce transit time and increase income opportunities for thousands of farmers and boost the agricultural economy of the region.
It will strengthen market linkages and bring improvement in the lives and livelihoods of farmers. Over time, this could lead to the creation of a robust value chain, boosting not only farmers’ incomes but also generating employment for thousands of youth in associated sectors like logistics, warehousing, and cold storage.
The launch of the parcel train represents the government’s commitment to integrating Jammu and Kashmir more deeply with the nation’s development story. Prime Minister Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat” finds a strong echo in this initiative, where infrastructure becomes the bridge to prosperity.
For too long, growers in Kashmir have felt marginalized by the lack of facilities that their counterparts in other states take for granted. The dedicated parcel train is a step toward bridging that gap and ensuring inclusivity in growth. Growers no longer will have to only depend upon the unpredictable Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
By reducing post-harvest losses, the parcel train will inject a fresh momentum into the rural economy of the Valley, where horticulture sustains nearly 70 percent of households. In a region where economic challenges often overshadow opportunities, this is a revolutionary step.
As the wheels of this train move from Budgam to Delhi, they carry not just crates of apples but also the aspirations of a community that has waited patiently for change. It is now incumbent upon both government agencies and farmers to build upon this milestone—by ensuring proper coordination, timely scheduling, and expansion of similar services to other parts of the country.
This train is more than a logistical service; it is a symbol of empowerment. It embodies the promise of a brighter, more prosperous future for Kashmir’s farmers—where their toil in the orchards is rewarded with stability, dignity, and opportunity.
