In fact, the year 2025 marks 150 years of Vande Mataram. Our national song ‘’Vande Mataram’’ by Bankimchandra Chatterji was written during the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Navami which was on 7th November in 1875. Vande Mataram our national song written by Bankim Chander Chatterjee is 150 years of age as it had been composed on 7th November 1875 and first appeared in a journal called ‘’Bangadarshan’’as part of Chatterjee’s novel ‘’Anandamath .‘’The song invoked the motherland as the embodiment of strength, prosperity, and divinity gave a poetic expression to India’s awakening spirit of unity and self-respect. The national song which it became in later years also is enduring symbol of devotion to the nation. The song aroused the fire and spirit of patriotism, nationalism and an urge to fight the colonial power and thus it became a symbol of unity and zeal and spirit of fighting for nationhood and showing the Britishers their place by sending their rule out and ushering the rule of independent India. Vande Mataram became a household song in Indian, first during the freedom struggle and then after the attaining of the freedom from the British yoke. Vande Mataram continues to inspire generations of the countrymen and is song on all national occasions to arouse patriotism and feeling of oneness and Indianness. Vande Mataram song turned 150 years on 7 November 2025 and the NDA government is planning to commemorate 150 years of the Vande Mataram song and year long programme is being implemented to celebrate the 150 years of the Vande Mataram national song and prime minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the year- long commemoration programme. It is so good and apt that the centre government headed by the BJP is celebrating the 150 years of the celebration of Vande Mataram song. Narendra Modi has asked rather exhorted the countrymen to celebrate the year long commemoration of the 150 years of the national song.PM has wrote on X that ,’’we are celebrating 150 glorious years of Vande Mataram song ,a stirring call that has inspired generations and ignited an undying spirit of patriotism across the country.150 years of Vande Mataram is a national commemorative initiative to celebrate the spirit of Vande Mataram and its unique role in the history of India. Vande Mataram is not just a song; it is the collective consciousness of India and was the rallying cry of freedom fighters during the struggle for independence. On 1st October the cabinet approved countrywide celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram to foster an impactful movement to connect citizens, especially our youth and students with the songs original, revolutionary spirit. The celebrations will honour this timeless message and ensure its legacy is fully celebrated and embedded in the hearts of the next generation. In 1896, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore sang Vande Mataram at the Kolkata session of the Indian National Congress. On August 15,1947 ,Pandit Omkarnath Thakur accepted an invitation from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to broadcast the tune over all India Radio at 6.30 AM. India today marks historic cum cultural milestone ,celebrating 150 years of its National Song ,Vande Mataram –a hymn that has inspired millions with its message of devotion, unity, and patriotism. It became a powerful emblem of India’s national identity and awakening. Vande Mataram played a pivotal role in India’s freedom movement, inspiring leaders, revolutionaries and general citizenry to rally for the motherland. The current celebrations honour the enduring legacy and reaffirm the timeless values of courage, sacrifice, and national pride that the song embodies. Vande Mataram our national song has passed through the history of the country’s freedom struggle and it became a household name in India thanks to its inspirational and nationalistic values. From appearing first in the literary journal Bangadarshan on November 7,1875, and later included into Anandamath, published in 1882.Its political importance emerged during the Swadeshi and anti-partition movements in Bengal, with the slogan Vande Mataram first raised publicly on August 7,1905 by thousands of students in Kolkata. The songs appeal soon spread beyond Bengal, becoming a unifying anthem for the burgeoning nationalist movement across India. It electrified and brought spirit and vitality in Indians to fight for the freedom of the country. Vande Matram became a unifying and binding force for the countrymen to unitedly fight for the independence of the country. The national song is the pulse and heartbeat of millions of Indian’s arousing in them the fire and spirit of patriotism and nationalism as well as a powerful tool of unifying the countrymen even after attaining the much needed freedom from the British yoke. By the early 20th century, Vande Mataram had evolved into a rallying cry for Indian nationalism. The newspapers like Bande Mataram spread its message of unity, self-reliance, and resistance against the colonial rule. The British rulers sought to supress its influence, imposing fines on students and banning its public recital. However such restrictions only resulted into its heightened symbolic significance as an anthem of defiance and solidarity. Slowly, the influence of Vande Mataram extended beyond Indian shores. In 1907, Madam Bhikaji Cama raised the tricolour flag in Berlin inscribed with the words Vande Mataram. Indian patriots abroad, from Europe to South Africa ,embraced the song as a symbol of resistance, chanting it during demonstrations and publishing magazines to promote nationalist ideals. The song inspired countless acts of courage from protests against British repression to commemorating freedom fighter’s sacrifices. In 1950,the constituent Assembly of India officially recognised Vande Mataram as the National Song, honouring it alongside Jana Gana Mana, the National Anthem. Dr Rajendra Prasad stressed its historic role in the freedom movement, highlighting that it deserved equal respect and reverence. This formal recognition cemented Vande Mataram’s place in India’s cultural and political landscape and heritage. The 50th anniversary of Vande Mtatarm is being marked with events across India and abroad. On, November 7,2025, the national level inaugural programme was held in Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Stadium, featuring performances by prominent singers, and a commemorative stamp and coin was released. Besides, exhibitions, and short films highlighting the song’s legacy were released. The year- long celebrations include radio and T.V Programmes, panel discussions, cultural evenings at Indian missions abroad, patriotic murals tree plantation drives, and global music festival. Social media campaigns and short films will showcase different facets of the song and its role in India’s freedom struggle. As India honours this milestone, Vande Mataram remains a living testament to the enduring power of art, devotion, and the spirit of the nation. In short, let us make the 150th year of the celebration of the Vande Mataram a people’s movement with the greater participation of the public and that will be the true celebration of the commemoration of the 150th year and legacy of the national song.
