Gdc darhal celebrates National Mathematics Day

Early Times Report

Darhal, Dec 22: Government Degree College Darhal marked National Mathematics Day with a vibrant, educational, and thought-provoking celebration, bringing together students, faculty members, and mathematics enthusiasts to honour the legacy of one of India’s greatest mathematical minds, Srinivasa Ramanujan. The nationwide observance, celebrated annually on 22 December, was held in 2025 under the theme “Mathematics, Art, and Creativity,” highlighting the intrinsic connections between logical reasoning, artistic imagination, and creative problem-solving.
The programme was organised under the patronage of the Principal, Prof. Zamir Ahmed Mirza. National Mathematics Day is observed every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887–1920), whose extraordinary contributions continue to influence modern mathematical research and inspire learners across the globe. The Government of India formally instituted this day in 2012, declaring Ramanujan’s birthday as an annual celebration in recognition of his profound work in number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.
At Government Degree College Darhal, the celebration commenced with a heartfelt tribute to Ramanujan. Faculty members and students paid floral homage to his portrait, acknowledging his relentless pursuit of mathematical truths despite limited formal training. The inspiring journey of Ramanujan—a self-taught genius who contributed nearly 3,900 mathematical results—set a reflective and motivating tone for the day’s events.
The relevance of the chosen theme resonated throughout the programme. Organisers emphasised that mathematics, much like art, serves as a powerful medium of creative expression—whether through the symmetry of geometric patterns, the visualisation of complex data, or the elegant simplicity of equations that capture universal truths. As part of the celebrations, Dr. Mohd Akhlaq, Head of the Department of Mathematics, delivered an insightful and comprehensive lecture on the life and unparalleled contributions of Srinivasa Ramanujan. He also highlighted the pivotal role of mathematics in shaping modern science and its wide-ranging applications across diverse fields.
