Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 28: Surinder Singh Sodhi, Member of the Governing Body of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and President, Jammu & Kashmir Rifle Association, today called on the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, at Raj Bhavan and held a detailed and forward-looking discussion on the development of shooting sports in the Union Territory. During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor emphasized the UT administration's strong commitment to promoting sports as a vital instrument of youth empowerment, discipline, and nation-building. He reaffirmed the government's resolve to develop world-class sports infrastructure and provide sustained institutional support to sportspersons across Jammu & Kashmir. Sodhi expressed his sincere gratitude to the Lieutenant Governor for his visionary leadership and consistent encouragement to athletes and sports bodies. He apprised the LG of his recent unopposed election to the Governing Body of the NRAI, marking the first-ever representation of Jammu & Kashmir in the apex national shooting sports body. The Lieutenant Governor congratulated S.S. Sodhi on this significant achievement and noted that such representation would further strengthen J&K's presence at the national level. The discussions focused on the rapid growth of shooting sports in J&K, particularly the increasing participation of young shooters and their commendable performances at state, national, and international competitions. Sodhi highlighted the need for advanced training facilities to fully nurture emerging talent. Key proposals discussed included the establishment of a 50-metre shooting range in Jammu or Kashmir as a joint initiative with the UT Government, the allocation of a dedicated office space for the Jammu & Kashmir Rifle Association at a suitable government sports facility, and the hosting of national-level shooting competitions in the Union Territory. The Lieutenant Governor observed that these initiatives would significantly strengthen high-performance training and position Jammu & Kashmir as a prominent shooting sports destination ahead of the LA Olympics 2028 and the Commonwealth Games 2030. The Lieutenant Governor also welcomed the proposal to enhance national collaboration through interactions with NRAI representatives from across the country and reiterated the administration's continued support for initiatives aimed at sporting excellence in the Union Territory. Describing the interaction as highly constructive and encouraging, Sodhi expressed his gratitude to the Lieutenant Governor for his guidance, support, and proactive approach towards sports development in Jammu & Kashmir.
