JAMMU, Dec 29: Jammu and Kashmir BJP Spokesperson & former Vice Chairman, Balbir Ram Rattan, has strongly endorsed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks on the growing public health challenge of antibiotic resistance, urging citizens to strictly follow the Prime Minister's call for responsible and guided use of antibiotics. He described the message as timely, science-backed, and crucial for protecting public health in the country.
Reacting to PM Modi's caution against the casual and unguided consumption of antibiotics, Balbir Ram Rattan said antibiotic resistance has become one of India's most serious yet often overlooked health threats. He emphasized that antibiotics should never be taken on one's own judgment and must only be used when prescribed by a qualified doctor.
Referring to the Prime Minister's appeal, Balbir Ram Rattan said that self-medication, particularly the unchecked use of antibiotics, is a dangerous practice that reduces the effectiveness of life-saving drugs. The Prime Minister has rightly said that medicines require guidance, and antibiotics require doctors. Ignoring this advice harms not just individuals but society as a whole, he stated.
Balbir Ram Rattan underlined that the Prime Minister's warning is supported by strong scientific evidence. PM Modi cited a recent Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) report which reveals that antibiotics are becoming less effective against common infections such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections. The report clearly links this alarming trend to the misuse and overuse of antibiotics.
He warned that antibiotic resistance can result in longer illnesses, higher treatment costs, and increased risk of death, turning routine infections into serious medical challenges.
"Diseases that were once easily curable may soon become life-threatening if we continue to misuse antibiotics," Balbir Ram Rattan cautioned.
Echoing PM Modi's message, he urged citizens to give up the habit of taking medicines at their own discretion. He appealed to people to consult doctors, follow prescribed treatment courses fully, and avoid demanding unnecessary antibiotics from medical professionals.
Balbir Ram Rattan also called upon healthcare institutions and civil society organizations to intensify awareness campaigns on the responsible use of antibiotics. He said collective public participation is essential to preserve the effectiveness of these critical medicines for future generations.
