GDC Bishnah celebrates Lohri, Makar Sankranti

Jammu, Jan 14: The 8 J&K Girls Battalion NCC and the Department of Punjabi, in collaboration with the Cultural Committee of Government Degree College (GDC) Bishnah, Jammu, organised a vibrant celebration of the traditional festivals of Lohri and Makar Sankranti at the college campus on 14.01.2026. Makar Sankranti, which marks the New Year as per the Hindu calendar, was celebrated in its true spirit. The programme was organised under the able guidance and leadership of Dr. Shallu Samyal, Principal, GDC Bishnah.
The programme was organised with the objective of enabling students to learn about, appreciate, and connect with their cultural heritage and traditional festivals, thereby fostering cultural awareness and respect for indigenous traditions. The celebration witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, NCC cadets, teaching faculty, and staff members, who actively took part in the festivities.
The event featured cultural performances, traditional songs, and rituals associated with Lohri and Makar Sankranti, highlighting the significance of these harvest festivals in promoting gratitude towards nature, social harmony, and the spirit of renewal and new beginnings. The active involvement of NCC cadets added discipline, vibrancy, and a sense of collective responsibility to the programme.
Addressing the gathering, the organisers emphasised the importance of preserving and celebrating traditional festivals as a means of strengthening cultural roots, moral values, and communal harmony among the younger generation. The programme provided an interactive platform for students to showcase their cultural talents and gain deeper insights into the cultural and seasonal relevance of these festivals in contemporary society.
The programme was coordinated by Dr. Kusum, Head, Department of Punjabi, GDC Bishnah, and the CTO of the 8 J&K Girls Battalion NCC, whose dedicated efforts ensured the smooth and successful conduct of the event. The celebration concluded on a joyful and enriching note, with participants expressing appreciation for the initiative and reaffirming their commitment to promoting cultural traditions and inclusive celebrations within the academic environment.
