Early Times Report
NEW DELHI, Jan 31: The inaugural ceremony of the National Workshop on Nuclear-Hydrogen Synergy 2026 (NWNHS-2026): Pathways for India's Clean Energy Transition, organized under the UNESCO Chair activity in the Department of Green Energy Technology (DGET), Pondicherry University, commenced with the Pondicherry University anthem, followed by the traditional lighting of the lamp and honouring of the dignitaries on the dais. Prof. R. Arun Prasath then delivered the welcome address, setting the tone for the workshop by underlining its national significance in the context of clean energy transition and nuclear-hydrogen synergy.
In his address, Prof. Arun Prasath expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Prakash Babu, for his guidance and support, to the Director of IGCAR, S. G. Pillai, for enabling the participation of eminent nuclear experts, and to the workshop's key supporters, including MSF Trustee Madam France and UNESCO Regional Officer Dr. Benno. He warmly welcomed the nuclear experts from IGCAR, the Dean, HoD, faculty members, students, researchers, media representatives, and all participants. He highlighted the twin challenges of rapid economic growth and climate change, noting that India is projected to remain one of the fastest-growing economies, with a steep rise in energy demand, while still relying heavily on carbon-based fuels. He emphasized India's strong international commitments, including increasing the share of clean and renewable energy to 50% by 2030, reducing carbon emission intensity by 35% by 2030 (from 2005 levels), achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, and progressing toward the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
