CHANDIGARH, Jan 31: Equal Opportunity Cell and Internal Committee (for Persons with Disabilities) of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women organised an awareness session on 'Gender Sensitisation and Social Welfare Policies for Students with Disabilities'.
The session featured Dr. M. Karuppasamy, Head, Department of Special Education, GRIID, Sector-31 C, Chandigarh, as the resource person. In his address, Dr. Karuppasamy discussed a wide spectrum of disabilities, including visual impairment, hearing impairment, locomotor impairment, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, mental illness, and learning disabilities such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Emphasising the significance of gender sensitisation, Dr. Karuppasamy elaborated on gender roles, gender education, prevailing gender issues, special needs, legal provisions for protection and safety, gender and disability rights, and gender bias in the media. The session witnessed an enthusiastic exchange of ideas, with students raising several pertinent queries that were addressed in detail by the resource person. The participants gained a deeper understanding of the concepts of gender sensitisation and inclusivity.
