Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 18: The Government on Wednesday informed the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly that 219 out of 877 ventilators installed in hospitals across the Union Territory are currently non-functional, highlighting significant gaps in critical care infrastructure.
In a written reply to National Conference MLA Shamim Firdous, Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo said that while 658 ventilators are operational, 219 remain out of order.
Providing institution-wise details, the Minister stated that Government Medical College Jammu and its associated hospitals have 320 ventilators, of which 209 are functional and 111 are non-functional. At SMHS Hospital Srinagar, eight ventilators are not working, while 44 ventilators in associated hospitals of Government Medical College Srinagar - excluding SMHS - are non-operational.
At Government Medical College Anantnag, only 10 of the 36 ventilators are functional. The number of non-functional ventilators stands at two in Government Medical College Baramulla, ten in Government Medical College Doda, two in Government Medical College Kathua and three in Government Medical College Rajouri. All ventilators at Government Medical College Udhampur (39) and Government Medical College Handwara (6) are reported to be fully functional.
The government further informed the House that at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) and its associated hospitals, 40 out of 53 ventilators are operational, while 13 remain non-functional.
Responding to another question from BJP MLA Dr Bharat Bhushan, the Minister said that Government Medical College, Kathua, has been upgraded from a 300-bedded facility to a 500-plus bedded hospital. She added that the present bed strength has exceeded the originally sanctioned capacity in order to meet the growing healthcare demands of the region, in line with National Medical Council guidelines.
On staffing shortages, the Minister acknowledged that 20 out of 63 sanctioned posts of Assistant Professors are vacant. Similarly, of the total sanctioned strength of 95 paramedical staff, only 68 are currently in position.
