Early Times Report CHANDIGARH, Feb 19: The Postgraduate Department of Sociology at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women organised an expert lecture on 'Understanding Women and Work: How the Social Dynamics Matter'. The session aimed to deepen students' understanding of the complex social, cultural, and structural factors influencing women's participation in the world of work. The resource person, Dr. Gurinder Kaur, Assistant Professor at the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development, delivered an insightful and engaging talk that unravelled the nuanced realities shaping women's work experiences. She highlighted the importance of recognising diverse interpretations of work, from unpaid caregiving and domestic labour to participation in the formal paid workforce, and stressed the need to appreciate the invisible dimensions of women's labour. Dr. Kaur examined how everyday routines and structural forces intersect to shape women's professional lives. She discussed critical dimensions such as class and caste binaries, workplace hierarchies, and social expectations, substantiating her analysis with scholarly perspectives and relevant case studies that enriched the audience's understanding. The interactive session encouraged students, as future professionals, to envision and foster equitable and inclusive workplaces. Emphasis was also laid on the importance of women's workforce participation for both economic growth and individual empowerment. Officiating Principal Neena Sharma commended the initiative, describing it as a valuable opportunity to reflect on how societal structures influence women's work experiences, from grassroots realities to leadership roles. She added that the lecture reaffirms the institution's commitment to fostering critical dialogue on gender and social equity. |
