Early Times Report
AMRITSAR, Feb 24: It is a matter of immense pride and pleasure that Guru Nanak Dev University has initiated the provision of monthly diet money to outstanding sportspersons across various sports disciplines from the academic session 2025-2026. This landmark initiative reflects the University's strong commitment to promoting excellence in sports and ensuring the holistic development of its athletes, in line with the dynamic vision of Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Karamjeet Singh, who has consistently prioritised higher academic standards alongside sports development.
More than 300 sportspersons from different games are benefiting from this scheme. For the current year, the University has distributed approximately Rs. 80 lakh towards diet support for the players. Under this scheme, diet money ranging from Rs. 3,500 to Rs. 10,000 per month is being directly credited to the players' bank accounts, depending upon their level of performance and achievements. This financial assistance enables athletes to maintain a balanced and nutritious diet, which is essential for enhancing stamina, strength, recovery and overall sports performance.
Significantly, the University has further strengthened its commitment by allocating Rs. 1.5 crore towards diet money for the next academic year, thereby ensuring sustained and enhanced support for sportspersons - a move that reflects the Vice-Chancellor's farsighted approach to nurturing talent and building a robust sports ecosystem within the academic framework.
On the occasion, Dr. Kanwar Mandeep Singh, Director Sports, stated that this initiative will have far-reaching benefits for the players. He emphasised that access to proper nutrition on a regular basis will significantly improve their physical conditioning and help them perform at higher levels in national and international competitions.
The Director Sports also expressed his sincere gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor for his constant encouragement and unwavering support towards the overall growth and welfare of the sportspersons. He remarked that the visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor has always prioritised sports development and athlete welfare at the University. He further thanked the authorities, including the Prof. H.S. Saini, Dean Academic Affairs, Registrar Prof. K.S. Chahal and Dr. S.S. Deol Dean Students' Welfare, for their support.
