| Pondicherry University Signs MoU with Ministry of Social Justice | | | Early Times Report NEW DELHI, Mar 2: Pondicherry University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Office of the Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (CCPD), under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. This landmark agreement signifies a major step toward strengthening institutional collaboration in the domains of disability rights, accessibility, and inclusive education. Through this partnership, both institutions aim to advance accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities by undertaking joint initiatives in research, internships, academic exchanges, conferences, and related scholarly activities It will also create structured avenues for students and scholars of the University to engage meaningfully with the CCPD through practical exposure and academic contributions. Welcoming the distinguished audience, Prof. S. Victor Anandkumar, Dean (International Relations) observed that the MoU demonstrates the University's unwavering commitment to inclusive education and institutional responsibility. He emphasized that such collaborations enhance academic engagement while reinforcing social accountability. In his remarks, Dr. A. Chidambaram, Coordinator of the MoU, underlined the University's sustained initiatives aimed at safeguarding the rights and addressing the needs of persons with disabilities through academic programmes and institutional mechanisms. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. P. Prakash Babu, Vice-Chancellor of Pondicherry University, described the MoU as a milestone in the University's journey toward inclusive education and social responsibility. He noted that the collaboration would deepen academic and policy engagement in disability rights and open meaningful opportunities for research, training, and student participation. He highlighted the University's inclusive measures, including free education for students with disabilities, campus accessibility initiatives, and fee waiver schemes, and stated that the agreement strengthens these ongoing efforts to ensure equitable access to higher education. Delivering his address, Shri S. Govindaraj, Commissioner, CCPD, commended the University for its proactive commitment to advancing the interests of students with disabilities. He referred to initiatives such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Disability Rehabilitation, UPSC coaching support for students with disabilities, UGC-supported programmes, and the effective functioning of the Higher Education for Persons with Special Needs (HEPSN) enabling unit. Emphasizing the significance of the partnership, he stated that the MoU formalizes cooperation between the University and the CCPD, paving the way for structured engagement in research, policy advocacy, training, and capacity building to enhance accessibility in higher education institutions. He added, "We are not merely signing the MoU; we are standing united, aligning our thoughts for a more inclusive and equitable world." |
