AIIMS Jammu achieves milestone with first Interstitial Brachytherapy for Tongue Cancer in J&K
3/12/2026 10:24:22 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Mar 12: In a significant advancement for cancer care in the region, All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jammu (AIIMS Jammu) has successfully performed its first interstitial brachytherapy procedure for the treatment of tongue cancer. This advanced and highly precise form of radiation therapy marks an important milestone in strengthening comprehensive oncology services at the institute and in the region.
The procedure was performed on a patient diagnosed with tongue cancer and involved placing specialized catheters directly into the tumor, through which a radioactive source delivers radiation precisely to the cancerous tissue while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy structures. This technique enables delivery of high radiation doses with exceptional accuracy, leading to improved treatment outcomes while preserving surrounding healthy tissues.
The procedure was performed under the guidance and active participation of Prof. (Dr.) D.N. Sharma, Executive Director and CEO, AIIMS Jammu, a nationally acclaimed radiation oncologist and pioneer in brachytherapy in India. Prof. Sharma is currently the President of the Indian Brachytherapy Society. With vast experience in radiation oncology and brachytherapy, he has played a pivotal role in advancing brachytherapy practices across the country. Over the years, he has received several prestigious national and international awards, fellowships, and research recognitions, and has contributed extensively to clinical research and innovation in radiation oncology.
The procedure was carried out by a multidisciplinary team comprising of Prof. (Dr.) Shabab Lalit Angurana, Head of the Department of Radiotherapy, Dr. Darwin Kaushal, Additional Professor in the Department of ENT, and Dr. Girija Sharma Assistant Professor, Department of Radiotherapy, along with their respective teams at AIIMS Jammu, who worked in close coordination to successfully perform this complex and specialized procedure.
The medical physics support for the procedure was provided by Dr. Seema Sharma, Senior Medical Physicist and RSO from National Cancer Institute , AIIMS New Delhi, along with the medical physics team (Mr. Shivam and Ms. Monika) from All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jammu.
The successful introduction of interstitial brachytherapy for the first time in Jammu and Kashmir at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Jammu marks a major milestone in expanding advanced cancer treatment services in the region. With the availability of this highly specialized procedure locally, patients from Jammu and Kashmir and neighboring regions will now benefit from access to advanced brachytherapy treatment without the need to travel outside the region. This development represents an important step toward strengthening comprehensive cancer care and bringing state-of-the-art radiation therapy closer to patients in the Union Territory.
