World Book and Copyright Day is a celebrated on April 23rd to promote the enjoyment of books and reading. It is celebrated across the world to promote the advantages of reading books, publishing and copyright. Through reading and the celebration of  World Book and Copyright Day, 23 April, we can open ourselves to others despite distance, and we can travel thanks to imagination.
In 1995, UNESCO decided to celebrate World Book and Copyright Day on this date to mark the birth and death anniversaries of several renowned authors. It is observed annually on 23 April, marking the deaths of the writers William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Copyright is a legal way to give creators of original works exclusive rights to it. It is giving “the right to copy”, but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for their work.
The copyright is a legal concept enacted by most governments, giving author or creators of original work exclusive rights usually for a limited time. Basically it is the right to copy. It also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work and other related rights. Book reading is very important. It is in fact a meaningful and most valuable activity one should do. The books are the best friends. Books are the treasure house of knowledge and wisdom. It is therefore, very imperative, for young old, for children & students, to read books and enhance knowledge. Reading is one of the best qualities that an individual should have. Books are often known to be your best friend for a specific reason. So, it is essential to build a good reading habit within oneself. We must all read daily for at least 30 minutes to enjoy the knowledge gained from reading. It gives a reader great pleasure to sit in a quiet place and enjoy reading without any disturbance. Reading is an excellent habit that one needs to develop in the course of life. Reading is essential because it shapes your mind and gives you infinite knowledge and lessons of life. Books will help you understand the world around you better in a much different perspective.
Books are unique because they have the ability both to entertain and to teach. Books are important in our life so we can able to gain knowledge. It is to ensure the culture to thrive and spread joy that this initiative by United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations. World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated worldwide to recognise the scope of books as a link between the past and the future, along with being a cultural and generational bridge. UNESCO and organisations representing publishers, booksellers and libraries select the World Book Capital for a year to maintain the celebrations of books and reading.
The day has become a platform for people across the globe, especially the stakeholders of the literary world including authors, publishers, teachers, librarians, public and private institutions etc. A book is more than paper and ink — it’s someone’s voice across time. Copyright doesn’t restrict knowledge; it protects the courage to create more of it. On World Book and Copyright Day, let’s promise to read more and respect the hands that write.
