Early Times Report
MANALI/SISSU, May 8: The Hon'ble Governor of Himachal Pradesh, Shri Kavinder Gupta on Thursday visited the world-famous Atal Tunnel Rohtang during his tour of Lahaul-Spiti and Manali and praised its technical excellence, strategic importance and transformative role in the region's development. The Governor traversed the tunnel from the South Portal to the North Portal and received a detailed briefing from Border Roads Organisation (BRO) officials on its construction, safety systems and year-round operational management. He said the Atal Tunnel is a remarkable feat of modern engineering and advanced technology that has opened new dimensions of connectivity and development in the Himalayan region.
Governor Gupta said the project is a living testament to the vision and determination of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. "The Atal Tunnel is not merely an engineering structure - it is a symbol of India's strategic strength, border area development and public welfare," he said. He noted that Lahaul-Spiti, once cut off from the rest of the state for months during winter, now remains connected throughout the year, greatly benefiting local residents in terms of mobility, healthcare, education and essential services. The Governor added that the tunnel has significantly boosted tourism, attracting visitors from across the country and abroad, thereby strengthening local employment and the regional economy.
Governor Gupta also visited Sissu Lake and Sissu Waterfall, appreciating the scenic natural beauty of the Lahaul Valley. He said Sissu has carved a distinct identity among Himachal Pradesh's premier tourist destinations.
The Governor visited the Raja Ghepan Temple - the revered deity of Lahaul - and prayed for the peace and prosperity of the people of the state and the nation. He was accorded a traditional welcome by the local administration at the North Portal, with District Collector Kiran Bhadana receiving him on behalf of Lahaul-Spiti district. He was also honoured in accordance with the rich cultural traditions of the Lahaul Valley.
