Drugs: An epidemic that must be eliminated from the root
5/21/2026 10:34:55 PM
Dr Vijay Garg

Drugs have become one of the most dangerous social problems of the modern world. What once started as a hidden issue has now turned into a widespread epidemic affecting millions of lives across cities, towns, and villages. From teenagers to adults, many people are falling into the trap of substance abuse, destroying not only their own future but also the peace and stability of families and society.
Drug addiction is not merely a personal weakness; it is a serious social, mental, and economic crisis. If this growing epidemic is not stopped in time, it can weaken the very foundation of a nation. Therefore, drugs must be eliminated from the root before they consume another generation.
Why Is Drug Abuse Increasing?
There are several reasons behind the rapid spread of drugs in society.
1. Peer Pressure Among Youth
Many young people begin taking drugs due to pressure from friends or the desire to appear “modern” and “cool.” What starts as experimentation soon becomes addiction.
2. Stress and Depression
Academic pressure, unemployment, family problems, and emotional struggles push many individuals toward drugs as a temporary escape from reality.
3. Unemployment and Lack of Opportunities
A lack of proper employment and career opportunities leaves many youths frustrated and hopeless. Some fall into bad company and eventually into addiction.
4. Easy Availability of Drugs
Illegal drug trafficking networks have made drugs easily accessible in many regions. This easy access has worsened the problem significantly.
5. Influence of Media and Entertainment
Sometimes movies, music, and online content indirectly glamorize smoking, alcohol, and drug culture, influencing impressionable minds.
Harmful Effects of Drugs
Drug addiction affects every aspect of human life.
1. Destruction of Health
Drugs severely damage the brain, lungs, heart, liver, and nervous system. Addiction can also lead to anxiety, depression, memory loss, and mental illness.
2. Breakdown of Families
A drug-addicted person often becomes irresponsible and aggressive. Financial crises, domestic violence, and broken relationships become common in affected families.
3. Rise in Crime
Drug abuse is closely linked with crimes such as theft, violence, road accidents, and illegal activities. Addicted individuals may commit crimes to obtain money for drugs.
4. Loss of Youth Potential
The youth are the strength of a nation. When young minds fall into addiction, the country loses future doctors, engineers, teachers, scientists, and leaders.
5. Economic Damage
Drug addiction not only affects families financially but also reduces national productivity. Huge amounts of money are spent on healthcare, rehabilitation, and law enforcement.
The Role of Society
Society cannot remain silent while drugs spread like poison. Everyone has a responsibility in this fight.
Parents must maintain open communication with their children.
Teachers should educate students about the dangers of addiction.
Communities should organize awareness programs and campaigns.
Religious and social organizations should guide youth toward positive values.
Government’s Responsibility
The government must take strong and immediate action to control this epidemic.
Strict Laws Against Drug Trafficking
Drug smugglers and suppliers must face severe punishment. Strong border security and strict monitoring are essential.
Awareness Campaigns
Educational institutions and media platforms should regularly spread awareness about the harmful effects of drugs.
Rehabilitation Centers
Addicted individuals should receive proper medical treatment, counseling, and rehabilitation support instead of social rejection.
Employment and Skill Development
Providing better education, sports facilities, and job opportunities can help keep youth away from drugs.
The Power of Youth
Young people themselves can become the strongest force against drugs. By choosing a healthy lifestyle, participating in sports, and supporting friends who struggle with addiction, youth can create a positive change in society.
Saying “No” to drugs is not weakness — it is courage and wisdom.
Conclusion
Drugs are like a silent poison slowly destroying individuals, families, and nations. This epidemic cannot be defeated by governments alone. Families, schools, communities, and especially young people must unite to fight against it.
A healthy nation can only be built when its youth are free from addiction. The time has come to spread awareness, strengthen laws, support victims, and completely eliminate drugs from the root.
The future belongs to a generation that chooses dreams, education, and purpose over addiction and destruction.
