Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 6: In a press Statement President Chamber of Commerce & Industry Arun Gupta expressed grave concern over the frequent unscheduled and prolonged power cuts across Jammu region causing immense hardships, inconvenience and discomfort to the honest consumers and households in this hot and humid weather conditions. Arun Gupta said that even the areas with 100% Smart meters are not spared from the unscheduled power cuts despite the government's assurance of providing 24x7 power supply in these zones at the time of installation of smart meters.
Arun Gupta further said that the unannounced power cuts are severely hitting the Industrial production and hurting small businesses thus causing significant financial losses, besides this the power cuts are also affecting the studies of the students. The erratic power supply is also severely crippling the essential services including water supply causing massive inconvenience to the residents and households.
He also said that frequent power breakdowns are damaging the sensitive electronic appliances and raising the operational costs of the commercial units who are forced to rely on diesel generators. He urged upon the UT administration to look into the crises and ensure regular power supply in the hot and humid weather.
He further said that hundreds of smart meters have been damaged and are non- functional due to erratic power supply and those consumers are being charged flat rates which are much higher than their actual consumption. He urged upon concerned authorities that the company responsible for installation of smart meters be asked to immediately replace the faulty smart meters so that the consumers are relieved of paying excess power bill amount.
Arun Gupta further expressed grave concern over the slow progress of underground electric wiring system in Jammu which has been started long back but has not been completed in any area. He said that without stabilized underground cabling network smart meters are exposed to high voltage fluctuation common in overhead electric lines and besides overhead lines continue to cause inconvenience, safety concerns and service disruption especially during adverse weather conditions, besides causing high distribution losses. He emphasized that the power development department should come forward with a concrete timeline for its execution and completion.
Arun Gupta also said that government is contemplating to introduce prepaid electric billing system. He urged that first of all government should develop the power infrastructure and provide 24x7 quality power supply to its consumers and then think about the prepaid billing system.
